Report: ‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff ‘House of the Dragon’ in Discussions to Cast Franchise’s First Black Lead Character
HBO has officially announced who will portray several main characters for its Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, but Deadline reports that an additional actor is also in the running.
According to the outlet, actor Danny Sapani could end up in the role of Lord Corlys Valaryon, also known as “The Sea Snake.” If Sapani scores the gig, he would mark the first Black actor to have a major role in the franchise.
Sapani is more than qualified. He has acted in some of the biggest movies of the past few years, including Black Panther, Penny Dreadful and Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi.
As for the characters that HBO has confirmed, Paddy Considine will portray King Viserys Targaryen; Emma D’Arcy will play Targaryen’s daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen; Olivia Cooke will portray Targaryen’s second wife, Alicent Hightower; and Matt Smith will play Prince Daemon Targaryen.
HBO also announced they’ve brought on Clare Kilner, Geeta V. Patel and Greg Yaitanes for the series’ directing team.
George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal co-created House of the Dragon, and Condal wrote the pilot script. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik will co-direct the series.
