Michigan Restoring Unemployment Work-Search Requirement
Michiganders on unemployment will have to show they’re actively on the hunt for work, effective May 30.
Those on unemployment will have to conduct a minimum of one work-search activity per week they certify for benefits.
Michigan will still offer the $300 weekly federal supplement and has no plan to discontinue that benefit.
All seven of Michigan’s Republican U.S. House members sent a letter to Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday (May 17) asking her to stop the extra payment. Currently, Michigan’s maximum state benefits are $362 per week, so the maximum combined benefits are $662 per week.
“We call on you to end participation in this program to get our state’s economy back on track and ensure our employers have access to the talent they need to return to normal,” wrote in the letter.
The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency doesn’t plan to end any federal unemployment programs, such as for self-employed or gig workers.
