Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday (July 15) that Canada may start to let fully vaccinated Americans into the country in mid-August for non-essential travel.

He added that Canada should be able to allow fully vaccinated travelers from all countries to visit soon, too.

"Canada would be in a position to welcome fully vaccinated travelers from all countries by early September," a readout from Trudeau's talk with leaders of Canada's provinces stated. "He noted the ongoing discussions with the United States on reopening plans and indicated that we could expect to start allowing fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents into Canada as of mid-August for non-essential travel."

Trudeau also stated that Canada has roughly 80% of eligible Canadians vaccinated with their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and more than 50% of eligible Canadians fully vaccinated.

Canada recently started easing its restrictions, letting fully vaccinated Canadians or permanent legal residents to enter Canada without quarantining. Visitors are still required to show a negative COVID-19 test before returning, and another once they return.
