Renovations start Tuesday (Aug. 3) on the Historic Hamtramck Stadium.

The building, which is where the Negro League's Detroit Stars played for years, is receiving renovations thanks to funds from an $850,000 grant proposal, approved by the Wayne County Commission. Additional funding is coming from the the Detroit Tigers Foundation, Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, Kresge Foundation, Friends of Historic Hamtramck Stadium, Michigan Municipal League Foundation the Hamtramck Parks Conservancy and via an African American Civil Rights grant, given by the National Park Service, Department of Interior.

The renovations will cost $2.6 million.

The Historic Hamtramck Stadium was built in 1930 and is one of just a few Negro League-era ballparks in existence in the U.S.
