Michigan Weather: Timeline for First Major Snow of the Season
Michigan’s first significant snowstorm of the winter season is set to reach the state this weekend. If you’re like me, you woke up to a rainy-looking day, but that’s going to change quickly as the weekend moves on. Here’s what to expect, and hopefully it will help you determine when to hit the road this weekend.
Saturday (Jan. 1) started with much of Michigan seeing some rain or a wintry mix, with temperatures above freezing. As the day moves on, temperatures will drop, and any precipitation will change over to snow as the afternoon and evening progress. Temperatures should fall into the 30s for much of Michigan.
Saturday night will see the most snow, with Sunday morning travel looking dicey across Lower Michigan. In the Detroit area, about 3″ to 5″ of snow are expected, with some areas getting more than 5″, according to Weather.com. The more north you go, the less snow you’ll likely get. Those by Lake Michigan should also expect some lake-effect snow. The show is going to be heavy and wet, so plan on it sticking around for a while.
Next week will bring arctic air, according to Weather.com, and single digit wind chills. We shouldn’t be surprised. After all, we’re into January now, and this is really our first blast of arctic air and winter weather. Brace for winter, Michiganders, because it’s here. I’m already ready to fast-forward to spring.
