Beloved Michigan Restaurant Closes After 87 Years in Business
It’s never a fun thing when a beloved restaurant closes its doors for good. It’s even more difficult when that restaurant has been around for decades. It feels like saying goodbye to a part of your community and daily routine.
That said, a beloved Michigan restaurant is closing its doors after 87 years in business. You read that correctly – a whopping 87 years. The restaurant first opened way back in 1934, so it’s truly a part of the Michigan community.
That restaurant is longtime Ypsilanti establishment Haab’s Restaurant. They announced the news late last week via a lengthy Facebook post, in which they thank their customers and staff or the many years of memories.
“It is with deep sadness that we share with you that we will be closing our doors effective at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 3,” they stated in the post. “It’s hard for us to believe that, after 87 years, there will no longer be a Haab’s Restaurant in downtown Ypsilanti.” They added, “We have enjoyed serving each of you, and perhaps the best part has been serving second- and third-generation families. However, Dave and I have finally had to admit that age and health are catching up with us. We will miss the family of customers and staff that we’ve built over the years (47 for me, and 35 for Dave). We will miss each and every one of you!” The note is signed Mike Kabat. The note also states that staffing has been a problem due to the ongoing pandemic. As it turns out, the community will miss Haab’s as much as they’ll miss the community. The Facebook post has 2,200 Facebook reactions as of Thursday (March 10) and keeps growing.
