We've all heard that getting at least eight hours of sleep per night is ideal. But, of course, many people don't get nearly eight hours per night (thanks, Netflix!), and some lucky folks get more. So, how many Michigan residents actually get the full eight hours of sleep, on average, each night?

The crew at Aeris by Robot has put together a study to determine exactly how much sleep residents in each of the U.S. states get per night. "We asked survey respondents how many hours of sleep they get per night on average and to rate the quality of that sleep," they state in the study. "Additionally, we asked questions about air quality while they’re sleeping, preferred sleeping positions, sleepwalking/talking, and other odd sleeping habits."

So, how much shuteye do Michiganders get? We actually get a good amount of sleep compared to other states: 7.31 hours per night. That's pretty far above the national average. Perhaps it's because there's nothing else to do during the cold winter months. "On the whole, the average American is not getting the typical eight hours of sleep per night," they state. "When asking survey respondents how many hours of sleep they get each night, the national average amounted to barely over seven hours (7.05 hours per night to be exact)."

Which state gets the most sleep? "At 7.82 hours per night, residents in Utah get the most sleep on average––11% more than the national average number of hours at 7.05," the study states. "Residents in Wisconsin and Nevada are runners-up at 7.57 and 7.46 hours per night, respectively. Alternatively, residents in Hawaii get the least sleep (6.55 hours per night)––7% less than the national average." Perhaps Hawaiian residents are up all night enjoying the beautiful weather. I know that's what I would do. Read the full study of how American sleep here.

It's always fun to see what baby names are trending each year. I looked up my name, Anne, and discovered it's not a very popular name anymore. It's not even inside the top 100 of girls' baby names. That's a bummer, but hey, I still like my name.

Names.org has put together a list of the Most Popular Baby Names in Michigan in 2022, using Social Security Administration data on births and user interest on its website. Every year, the U.S. Social Security Administration publishes the first names from all Social Security card applications for births that have taken place in the U.S. since 1880. I would love to see what the most popular names were back in 1880. Actually, I just looked up the data via the Social Security administration, and it looks like John and Mary were the most popular names back then, which are still popular names today.

So, which baby names are the most popular in Michigan in 2022? For boys, Noah is No. 1, followed by Liam and Oliver. For girls, Amelia is No. 1, followed by Charlotte and Olivia. View the full list of the top baby names for boys and girls in Michigan for 2022 below. Note that this data, although the most recent available, did not include information from 2021 because it is not yet available.
