It appears Michigan is very educated, because for a second year in a row, the Mitten is home to the No. 1 most educated city in the entire U.S. We have several great public universities, as well as lots of private ones, so it's no big surprise, but still nice to see us top the national list.
WalletHub has released their annual list of the most educated cities in the U.S. "Cities want to attract highly educated workers to fuel their economic growth and tax revenues," they state in the study. "Higher levels of education tend to lead to higher salaries. Plus, the more that graduates earn, the more tax dollars they contribute over time, according to the Economic Policy Institute. In turn, educated people want to live somewhere where they will get a good return on their educational investment. People also tend to marry others of the same educational level, which means that cities that already have a large educated population may be more attractive to people with degrees."
To find the most educated cities in America, "WalletHub compared the 150 largest metropolitan statistical areas, or MSAs, across 11 key metrics. Our data set ranges from the share of adults aged 25 and older with a bachelor’s degree or higher to the quality of the public-school system to the gender education gap."
So, what's the most educated city in America? Ann Arbor. The city has the highest percentage of high school diploma holders, highest percentage of associates degree holders or college-experienced adults and other bonuses. I know quite a few people who live in Ann Arbor, and they do talk about the high quality of public schools in the area, which is another factor. Also, Ann Arbor is, of course, home to the University of Michigan, one of the best universities in the U.S. Find out more via the YouTube video here. Find the full list here.
College is great for some people, but it's not for everyone. I personally enjoyed going to a four-year college and learned a lot, but there are plenty of non-college training options that enable students to make an incredible salary upon graduation.
The crew at Indeed.com has put together a list of 50 high-paying Michigan jobs that you can get without a bachelor's degree. They note that, "there are a variety of jobs in Michigan for those interested in finding a career right after high school," adding that, "these roles tend to be in the trade sectors where employees can learn from more experienced team members understanding what types of positions offer on-the-job training and immediate employment can help you accelerate your career."
The tally is based on the most up-to-date Indeed salary information. Going through this list, a few of these ideas raise an eyebrow, such as "professional blogger." I know plenty of bloggers who don't make anywhere near $86,000, but it's apparently a lucrative business for those with a large following and web traffic. Other jobs include nuclear power reactor operator, solar sales consultant and real estate broker, all of which, according to the study, make near $100,000 per year. One exciting-sounding job on the tally is a criminal investigator, who makes more than $100,000 per year, according to Indeed, and "collects evidence to help solve cases." Sounds like a fun job to me!
The Indeed study breaks down the 15 highest-paying jobs without a four-year degree and then goes on to list 19 additional high-paying jobs that don't requite a degree and 16 high-paying jobs that just require a certificate. Read on for the full list, and find more information via Indeed here.
