Michigan got its first snowfall of the season earlier this week, including more than a foot of the white stuff in the Upper Peninsula. That's way too early for my taste. I'm the kind of person that would like to fast-forward from early fall to late spring and skip everything in between. But, alas, we live in Michigan, so that's not realistic.

Thankfully, after the bitter cold temperatures of earlier this week, much of Michigan is getting a huge warmup this weekend. It's going to be like summer again for a few days, and I am so ready for it.

According to the National Weather Service, on the east side of the state, temperatures will be in the 70s through Monday (Oct. 24). "Breezy SW wind reinforces the supply of warm air into SE Michigan as nearly full sunshine occurs through patchy high clouds. Another warm day across the region Sunday as mostly sunny sky in the morning sees thickening high clouds during the afternoon," they state. Temperatures will then fall into the 60s and upper 50s for the next week. Not nearly as bad as we had it earlier this week.

On the west side and middle of the state, the prediction is similar, with Grand Rapids also looking to hit the 70s through Monday and then drop into the 60s and 50s. "After a week of below normal temperatures, we have changed our local weather patterns to a warm and mostly dry one. Today being our first in a series of warm and dry days," the NWS states. The Upper Peninsula is also getting a break from the cold, as following that snowstorm, they'll be in the 60s this weekend and top out in the 50s and upper 40s last week. Enjoy this last round of warm weather while you can.

I'm always surprised how many people say fall is their favorite season, but it is a beautiful time of year, especially in Michigan. I personally think Michigan offers some of the best fall colors in the entire U.S., and now there's proof that the Mitten is a great place to see vibrant fall colors. I'm already seeing a few leaves changing colors, and while it's beautiful, I have to admit I wasn't very happy to see the changing leaves, since it means summer is winding down. I'm not ready for it to end.

The crew at US News & World Report has put together a list of the best places to view fall foliage in the U.S. "There's no other time of year quite like fall," they state. "Brisk, cool mornings give way to afternoons warmed by the sun, and the drop in temperature causes leaves to change from shades of green to a kaleidoscope of warm colors before winter sets in. The displays of color are different across the U.S., but they're all brilliant when leaf-peeping season is at its peak."

Of course, the best times to view fall foliage differs by region and year, so check with your local spots before venturing out on a big fall foliage viewing trip. "Many top destinations to view fall's splendor have leaf and foliage reports, maps and trackers so you can follow the local predictions and current conditions – and arrive just in time for the best of the season," US World & News Report says.
