It's always bittersweet when a local Michigan store closes after many years in business. On one hand, it's nice that the community supported that shop for so many years, and I'm sure many good memories were made. On the other, it's sad to see a local establishment close.
Now, a Michigan jewelry and gift shop is closing its doors after 24 years of service. It's a beloved shop that many local families frequented for years.
That shop is Terry's Jewelry and Gifts Inc. in Holt. The owners recently took to Facebook to announce the news. They also shared that they are having a big liquidation sale, because everything has to go.
"I'm sure most of you have heard that Terry's Jewelry and staff are retiring and having a HUGE LIQUIDATION SALE, BUT you may not know we have extended our hours throughout this closing sale," they stated on Facebook. "The hours are 10 a m - 5 pm Mondays through Saturdays. Yes even Saturdays. Everything must go. So don't wait to shop this once in a lifetime Jewelry barging (sic) sale. See you all soon. Thanks for all the community support for 24 years. Terry." More information about the shop can be found at Facebook.com/TerrysJewelryandGifts.
Each year, U.S. News & World Report comes out with its rankings for the best colleges in the United States. Michigan, of course, is known for having great colleges and universities, so it's no surprise that the Mitten is a often a favorite on the list.
Now, U.S. News & World Report has released its 2022-2023 Best Colleges rankings, and a whopping 46 colleges and universities in Michigan were ranked among the best. So which schools were on top?
U.S. News has been publishing this guide of the best colleges across the U.S. for almost 40 years. According to a release, methodology has evolved over the years to reflect changes in higher education, says Kim Castro, editor and chief content officer at U.S. News. U.S. News prides itself on offering a ranking for millions of parents with "useful data and information to help with one of life's biggest decisions," Castro said.
In this year's study, U.S. News ranked a massive 1,500 colleges and universities in 17 academic measures. When going about ranking, U.S. News first put each school into a category based on its mission and, sometimes, its geographic location. There are also different lists for different kinds of universities. National universities are research-heavy and have several doctoral programs, while liberal arts colleges are ranked separately.
Regarding Michigan's schools, U.S. News states, "Top colleges and universities are located throughout Michigan and in cities such as Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint, Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor. Lansing, the state capital, is home to one of the largest colleges in the U.S., Michigan State University, which enrolls more than 37,000 undergraduate students annually. Higher education options in Michigan include large research universities, private midsize colleges and several small, notable liberal arts colleges." Read on for 10 Michigan colleges and universities that made the cut. I'm happy to see my alma matter, Michigan State University, on the tally.
