If you're looking to relocate or buy a new home, finding a safe city is important. Michigan, in my opinion, is a beautiful, safe state, but a new study points to one city as being the most dangerous cities in America.
The research comes from NeighborhoodScout.com, which has released its list of the "Top 100 Most Dangerous Cities in the U.S. for 2023." The study is based on the number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents. If you're wondering, violent crimes include rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault in this research. In the study, the outlet factored in the number of violent crimes reported to have occurred in each city and the population of each city. The study also uses the latest data available, which represents the calendar year 2021 and was released in October 2022.
The most dangerous city in all of America, according to the study, is Bessemer, Alabama. It was No. 2 last year and took the top spot in 2023, pushing out Monroe, Louisiana. It's also worth noting that this list features 10 new cities, meaning, "many of the dangerous cities on the list this year have appeared on past lists," they state.
So, what's the most dangerous city in Michigan? One might think Detroit, but it's actually Saginaw. The violent crime rate per 1,000 residents is 25.1, and your chance of being a victim is one in 39. That seems really high. Detroit actually came in not far behind at No. 6 on the list. Other Michigan cities that made the tally include Kalamazoo at No. 12, Lansing at No. 17, Inkster at No. 29, Flint at No. 42, Battle Creek at No. 47, Jackson at No. 51, Pontiac at No. 53 and Grand Rapids at No. 31. That's a lot of Michigan cities inside the top 100. Find the full list of "Top 100 Most Dangerous Cities in the U.S. for 2023" here.
Many people factor in safety when it comes to picking a place to live. I personally think Michigan is a pretty safe state, but there are always going to be areas in any area that are less safe than others, so you should know where to be extra careful.
The crew at RoadSnacks.net has released a list of the 10 most dangerous cities in the entire state of Michigan. They start the study with some humor, saying, "Michigan would like to think that the only things dangerous in their state is the Detroit lions' defensive line and driving over the Mackinac Bridge during a snowstorm; but sadly, that's not the case."
To compile the list, the study states that, "We looked at violent crimes and property crimes in cities with a population of 5,000. Folks, the cities that made our list have robberies happening in broad daylight, car jackings, and daily shootings." The study also says that even if your city makes this list, it's not all bad, adding, "We're not saying that there aren't little pockets of goodness in these cities. The neighborhoods and shopping centers in these Michigan cities are not ALL bad. We do recommend that you spend some time studying them before you make a move. And If do you choose one of these cities, you're going to have to be aware of your surroundings at all times."
So, don't take this list as a "bad cities" list. According to RoadSnacks.net, these are just the cities with higher rates of crime, so you have to be careful in certain areas when you're traveling or living there. Read on for the list of the 10 most dangerous cities in Michigan, according to RoadSnacks.net. By the way, Detroit is not at the top spot on this list, which might surprise you.
