If you’re one for traveling solo, then you may want to add these cities to your travel list. Good Housekeeping compiled a list of the 20 best solo travel destinations in the United States. They factored in variables such as walkability, safety, self-care opportunities, number of historic sites, and access to nature. Their list features mountain and beach destinations to small towns and large cities.

Ann Arbor is one of the best cities to travel solo in the U.S.

Home to the University of Michigan and full of culture, Ann Arbor made the list in spot number 12. The publication said the city is “an under-the-radar town perfect for museum lovers, thanks to the University of Michigan.” Visitors to the town can find the Museum of Art, Museum of Natural History, and Museum of Archaeology. They also suggested visiting the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and catching a show at the Hill Auditorium.

Other cities mentioned

They kicked off the list with Saratoga Springs, New York. They said the upstate New York town is a short Amtrak ride from the New York City, so it's ideal for people looking for a quick solo escape. This town also features horse races at the historic Saratoga Race Track, concerts at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and mineral spring baths at the Saratoga Spa State Park.

Wrapping up the list is South Bend, Indiana in the number 20 spot. Though at the bottom of the list, they said college towns make for the perfect solo traveler getaway. There's a three-story automotive museum, two art museums, a gorgeous neo-Gothic church, the Morris Performing Arts Center, and a scenic riverfront park. It also has several chocolate shops, the Indiana Whiskey Company for tastings.
