Protect Your Kia And Hyundai: Get A Free Steering Wheel Lock

There has been a disturbing trend, where thieves have been specifically targeting 2010-2021 Kia and Hyundai cars. Some of these thieves are proudly showcasing their stolen cars on social media platforms. Shockingly, the videos they’ve posted have racked up millions of views.

Recently, the companies agreed to a class-action lawsuit settlement worth about $200 million, over claims that many of their cars are vulnerable to theft. NPR reported that compensation to owners includes up to $145 million in out-of-pocket losses. That money will be distributed to people who had their vehicles stolen. Affected owners can be reimbursed up to $6,125 for total loss of vehicles. They can also be reimbursed for up to $3,375 for damages to the vehicle and personal property, as well as insurance-related expenses.

In response to the car thefts, Hyundai and Kia have developed theft deterrent software for millions of their vehicles that lack an immobilizer. They will provide it free of charge to vehicle owners. The software updates the theft alarm software logic to extend the length of the alarm sound from 30 seconds to one minute. It also requires the key to be in the ignition switch to turn the vehicle on.

At the same time, Hyundai and Kia have been collaborating closely with law enforcement agencies to make a significant impact. Since November 2022, they have joined forces to distribute over 26,000 steering wheel locks to 77 law enforcement agencies across 12 states, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

How to get a free steering wheel lock in Michigan?

Michigan State Police (MSP) is distributing free anti-theft steering wheel locks for certain Kia and Hyundai cars. Owners of these cars can go into one of the MSP Posts and show their proof of ownership to get a free anti-theft steering wheel lock.

You’ll be happy to know that the steering wheel locks are being distributed at specific locations in Metro Detroit. Two of the posts where you can get them for free are the Metro North Post situated at 14350 10 Mile Rd., Oak Park, and the Metro South Post located at 12111 Telegraph Rd., Taylor. Other Michigan State Police (MSP) Posts are also offering them. If you’re interested, reach out to your local MSP Post to inquire about their availability.
