Eastern Market Brewing Co. Unveils Detroit Self-Serve Taproom
Eastern Market Brewing Co. is expanding, planning to open a self-serve beer and Detroit-style pizza restaurant at the former Founders Brewing location in Detroit. This new venture will be named Elephant & Co. It will offer a range of self-serve taps and Detroit-style pizza. They will also serve coffee roasted on-site as part of their vegan donut venture, Dooped Donuts, which had its first location open at 1555 Broadway in Downtown Detroit.
The beginnings of Eastern Market Brewing Co.
Eastern Market Brewing Co. took a moment to reflect on its journey in an Instagram post, recalling how it opened its doors for the first time in 2016, allowing marketgoers to catch a glimpse of their vision. “One short year later, in 2017, that vision came to life, and we proudly poured our first beer at Eastern Market After Dark. Fast forward six years, and we’re announcing our boldest venture yet: Elephant & Co. located at 456 Charlotte St. in Detroit.”
Since establishing the brewery six years ago, it has continuously expanded, This includes the creation of the Ferndale Project in the former Axle Brewing Co. space in Ferndale and the opening of a self-serve beer location called Lincoln Tap in the former ROAK Brewery in Royal Oak. Plans are in place to rebrand the latter location as Elephant & Co. and experiment with various concepts, including Detroit-style pizza and barrel-aged beers.
What’s to come with Elephant & Co.?
According to the brewery, Elephant & Co. is expected to open in 2024. In the meantime, the brewery will activate the space, including hosting an event on Friday, October 27, to raise funds for community-based charities in Detroit. Founders Brewing Co., the Grand Rapids-based brewing company, opened its second taproom at this location in 2017, aiming to expand its presence in Detroit. However, Founders chose to close it in May after a challenging six-year period that included a majority sale to Spanish beer company Mahou San Miguel, two racial discrimination lawsuits (one of which resulted in a temporary closure in 2019-20 due to community concerns), and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to extended indoor dining closures across the state.
Gluten-Free Foodie Guide: 4 Metro Detroit Restaurants To Try
In recent years, the gluten-free diet has gained considerable popularity. A growing number of people have opted to eliminate gluten from their meals. Some people must adhere to a gluten-free diet due to medical conditions, such as celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. But there’s a significant portion of the population that has willingly chosen this dietary path for many reasons.
Some reasons for the alternative diet lifestyle.
One reason people choose to adopt this diet is for their health and well-being. Some believe that eliminating gluten can improve digestion, increase energy levels, and help with weight management. However, there’s a lack of scientific evidence supporting these claims. The perception that a gluten-free diet can contribute to a healthier lifestyle often influences people’s dietary choices.
Even without a formal medical diagnosis, some people believe that they are gluten intolerant. People who experience bloating, fatigue, or gastrointestinal distress may choose to eliminate gluten from their diets.
Celebrity influence, social media, and popular culture have also contributed to the normalization and popularity of the food alternative lifestyle. For some, adopting a gluten-free diet is a personal experiment. It is often driven by curiosity and the desire to explore alternative dietary approaches.
Whether driven by health aspirations, personal experimentation, or influenced by trends, this movement has become a significant dietary choice for many. The decision to adopt a gluten-free lifestyle can be due to a combination of factors ranging from health consciousness and self-perceived gluten intolerance to social and cultural influences.
