Cathay Williams – Black History is American History

At a time when the military banned women, former slave, Cathay Williams disguised herself as a man and entered the all-black US infantry, the Buffalo Soldiers. She entered as William Cathay for two years. When she was ready to give up Army life, she allowed her doctor to discover her secret. She was honorably discharged from the military.
