Detroit Lions Are No. 1 in a Key Offseason Metric

The Detroit Lions are No. 1 in a key offseason metric, which makes me a happy girl. Is it football season yet? Not to wish away summer, but I can't wait for football to start. Now that the NBA season has almost ended, I don't have much to watch, especially with the Detroit Tigers not being on Comcast/Xfinity.

Before we get to that offseason metric, it's worth noting that the Detroit Lions are among the teams with the best chances of winning the Super Bowl next season who don't have a Lombardi Trophy yet. NFL expert Eric Edholm at NFL.com has a new feature out ranking the 12 teams that lack a Lombardi Trophy. Of those teams, he has the Detroit Lions as having the best chance of going all the way. I say, it's absolutely time for the Detroit Lions to show the world who's boss. It's been a long time coming. Edholm states, "With the Goff-led offense, an improved defense and the ultra-aggressive Dan Campbell making the calls, Detroit is one of the most dangerous teams in football, even in what appears to be a highly competitive NFC North." He adds, "With that comes added pressure, and the Lions won’t sneak up on anyone this season." In total, 12 teams have never won the Super Bowl. His No. 2 pick on the list is the Cincinnati Bengals, and No. 3 is the Buffalo Bills. So, we're in good company, as both of those teams look to be strong next season. Just thinking about it makes me nervous.

Now, onto the key offseason metric where the Detroit Lions sit at No. 1. Spotrac.com has put together some research on the amount of spending each NFL team has done in the offseason. The team who has done the lowest amount of spending during this offseason has been the Dallas Cowboys, and they're actually the lowest-spending team by more than $50 million. For all the big talk that the Cowboys have, it's kind of surprising. I'll try not to giggle. But, the Detroit Lions were the team with the most offseason spending, putting almost $626.5 million into future spending. Further down on the list, the Philadelphia Eagles were No. 2 at $558.1 million in spending and the Carolina Panthers were No. 3 at $456.9 million. The New England Patriots at $418.3 million and Jacksonville Jaguars at $413.2 million rounded out the top five, respectively.
