There was buzz online Monday (June 17) that Rite Aid would be closing more Michigan and Ohio locations, and as it turns out, that buzz was correct. Here are the Rite Aid locations that are closing in Michigan and what it means for your local location.

Rite Aid is Closing More Michigan Locations

Rite Aid, one of the U.S.'s largest drug store chains, will close 12 more Michigan stores, the company said in a court filing this week, as it tries to exit federal bankruptcy protection. The company filed the document on Monday (June 17) in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New Jersey. It didn't state when the stores would shut down, what will happen to the employees or what will happen to prescriptions, but it did indicate that the non-prescription merchandise will be liquidated in "store closing" and "going-out-of-business" sales. Rite Aid currently has 186 stores in Michigan.

So, Rite Aid is closing more Michigan locations. The stores closing are largely in the metro Detroit area, but there are locations all over the state, too. Rite Aid is also closing 15 Ohio stores. In general, pharmacy chains have been struggling as of late. CVS and Walgreens have also announced plans to close locations due to hard times. So, Rite Aid isn't alone in their struggles. One of the reasons Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreen have been struggling is that they've been served with lawsuits due to their distribution of opioid painkillers. In fact, the U.S. Justice Department filed a complaint regarding the opioid issue last year.

I actually have fond memories of going to Rite Aid throughout my life. Sure, it might seem weird to have fond memories of visiting a pharmacy chain. But, in high school and college, I discovered Rite Aid's amazing deals on makeup, and it was always a treat after finals to go there and buy some celebratory makeup. They also have great season items that I've always enjoyed, especially around Halloween. There's just something local and friendly about a neighborhood pharmacy, and even though Rite Aid is a chain, it always had that flavor, at least in my area.
