LSSU Releases 2025 Banished Words List

I look forward to Lake Superior State University’s (LSSU) entertaining “Banished Words List,” originally called the “List of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Mis-Use, Over-Use and General Uselessness.”

I look forward to Lake Superior State University’s (LSSU) entertaining “Banished Words List.” The list got its start in 1976 when former LSSU Public Relations Director Bill Rabe published the “List of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Mis-Use, Over-Use and General Uselessness.”

Lake Superior State President, Dr. David Travis says the list matters because, Words matter! Old habits can be hard to break and we’re happy to serve as a resource for the court of public opinion on what should continue to be part of the English language and what needs to be put to rest.”

So, what words need to be put out like 2024’s trash?

LSSU receives submissions from around the world each year. The recurrence of similar words from various different regions show the universal challenge of struggling with difficult words or phrases.

One person wrote, “Hearing someone say ‘someone is so cringe’ makes me cringe!” Game Changer,” also caused a reaction with one DC man stating, “Nothing is a game changer if everything is a game changer.”

Other phrases such as “sorry not sorry” and “IYKYK” were criticized for their lack of sincerity and clarity. (Source: LSSU.edu)

I was sure “demure” was going to be on that list… 100%.

About Randi Myles:

I am a child of God that has a lot to say.

Here you will find conversations with artists, authors, speakers, and teachers within the faith-based community. Also, my journey has been colorful, rich, and sometimes really hard so, I look for answers and respite through these posts. My mom wanted me to write a book and I'm working on that, so bear with me as I fumble my way through.

I am working on balancing my extremely fun work life with my personal life that is filled with challenges these days. I know that God will see me to victory so... welcome to my life.

Randi Myles is the mid-day host on Detroit’s Praise Network. Randi’s mom knew she was destined to be in some form of entertainment when even as a small child, she would pretend a pencil was a microphone and sing and charm family and friends. Later she would sing in church and college choirs. However, it wasn’t until she attended Specs Howard School of Media Arts, that Ms. Myles would find her true voice. Randi enjoys writing about the city of Detroit, faith, and the community.
