September marks the start of Apple's Manufacturing Academy in Detroit. The education hub -- much more than just a retail store -- is a significant expansion in Apple's investment in the city, and may signal more exciting things to come.

The no-cost program puts local makers in touch with Apple's technology experts, giving them an opportunity to study AI and smart production methods from the business leaders who do it best. "What we're trying to do is bring some of our knowledge about smart manufacturing, A.I. and other things, to and make it accessible to these businesses and have give them access directly to Apple engineers to address their specific issues," said Shawn Henze, senior director of product operations for Apple, according to Daily Detroit.

Small to mid-sized firms with staff counts from twelve to several hundred can join the Academy and learn Apple's methods for running supply chains and training workers. Each business gets tips that fit their needs: last month's two-day workshop mixed class learning with direct business consultations. "They gave us a consultation, and some classes where they explained how they use some of their technologies and their principles," Jimmie Comer II told Daily Detroit. Comer represented LM Manufacturing, which makes car seats in Detroit.

A new Apple store opened on Woodward Avenue last week, but it was clear this was no normal Apple Store opening when CEO Tim Cook attended the event in person. Cook engaged with local business leaders and emphasized Apple's renewed commitment to Detroit.

Apple has long had a community and economic-growth focused approach to Detroit, and nowhere has this been more clear than Apple's Developer Academy. Working with Michigan State University, Apple's Developer Academy has trained more than 1,000 students in technology and business skills. With coding bootcamps, internships, and mentorship, the Developer Academy is a launchpad for Detroit tech careers.
