On Oct. 9, the Sterling Heights Planning Commission reviewed plans for a Sheetz store at the corner of Mound Road and Metropolitan Parkway. The commission voted to recommend to deny the proposal, which would have combined a gas station with food service.
Sheetz's real estate group, Skilken Gold, wants to build on 3 acres. Their plans showed a 6,100-square-foot building that mixed quick food, outdoor tables, and fuel pumps. A drive-thru window added to the mix.
The proposed site sat on what used to be the Detroit Free Press printing plant. Right now, rules mark this spot for light industry.
"That corner is more conducive to a Sheetz location, thus giving them a more streamlined path to opening," City Manager Mark Vanderpool told the Macomb Daily in July.
The city's Assistant Planner Shawn Keenan supported the project. If it had passed, workers planned to break ground next summer, with doors opening in early 2027.
Just weeks ago, Sheetz cut the ribbon at their first Macomb County spot in Chesterfield Township. Their bold push includes 15 new stores across the region - from Warren to Shelby Township, with stops in Macomb, Roseville, Eastpointe, and Fraser.
Not everyone welcomes such big changes. In Oakland County, one planned site hit a wall when local officials said no, sparking legal battles.
Still, Sheetz pushes ahead with big dreams - 50 to 60 Michigan stores within four years.
