Flint sits at the bottom. Detroit trails just behind. Both Michigan cities occupy the two worst spots among 500 American cities in Lawnstarter's 2025 quality of life study, which examined municipalities through safety, education, healthcare access, and 10 additional metrics.

Flint came in dead last when researchers measured economic stability and physical health. The city ranked second-worst in housing and infrastructure and among the 10 worst locations in mental health.

Detroit claims America's worst ranking in housing and infrastructure. The Motor City came in second worst in economic stability. It landed among the nation's bottom 10 regarding safety and mental health, as reported by Click On Detroit.

The research included some bright spots. Lawnstarter puts Flint at #186 among the 500 cities in healthcare access—a surprising result given its struggles. The study also ranked the area at #220 in air and water quality, showing improvement after a decade of work to address the water crisis that made international headlines.

Detroit came in at #175 among the 500 cities in social and personal freedoms.

Four Michigan cities landed among the 100 with the best quality of life in America: Rochester at #32, Troy at #62, Ann Arbor at #74, and Farmington Hills at #82.

Rochester ranks 9th in the nation when it comes to safety and 10th in recreational facilities. Ann Arbor comes in 12th in education.

Michigan has three of the nation's best 20 cities in housing and infrastructure. Troy came in at #15, Southfield at #17, and Farmington Hills at #18. Another seven cities from the state made the Top 100 in this category.

Lansing ranks 20th in the country in air and water quality. Fifteen cities from the state were included in the study.
