Hall of Fame basketball forward, Julius Winfield ( “Dr.J”) Erving was born in East Meadow, NY, today in 1950.
Julius Erving got the name “Dr. J” while in high school. Though it isn’t clear ‘how’ he got the name, it served him well throughout his long basketball career. Erving helped the New York Nets win the ABA championship in 1974 and 1976. He then joined the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, leading the club to a world championship In 1983. Dr. J played in more than 800 games, scoring an average of 22 points a game before retiring in 1987.
