A widespread power outage is affecting downtown Detroit. Mayor Mike Duggan has scheduled a live news conference for 2 p.m. to update the situation.
All Detroit Public Schools are dismissing early. The City County Building, Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, Joe Louis Arena, City Airport and additional courthouses are currently without power.
City Hall has been evacuated. We’re also learning that parts of Wayne State University are affected by the outage. Classes have been canceled for the day. The People Mover is currently out of service. Traffic lights are also out. The Detroit Institute of Arts has closed for the day and employees have been sent home. The museum had about 900 school kids in the building when the grid went down. All students safely made their way out and to their buses.
DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital is also affected by today’s power outage.
