A Google search says people ask the question “What is Christmas Michigan known for?” Well, a Michigan Town called Christmas, better be known for Christmas. According to www.awesomemitten.com, Christmas Michigan was founded in 1938 by a local man that started a factory that made Christmas toys and gifts. The original name of the town was Onata, but the town changed the name to Christmas to position the town as a winter vacation spot.

Christmas Michigan is located between Munising and Au Train, on the shores of Bay Furnace. You won’t miss the town as you are greeted by a giant Santa pointing you where to go by the road.

The town stays diligent to this theme as it is Christmas all year round in the town of Christmas. Their post office is one of the busiest in Michigan. Everyone comes to this post office to send out their letters to get the coveted “Christmas” stamp.

The town is a small sleepy town of only about 400 people. However, there is no lack of things to do in and around the town. Some of the things you can do include:

  • Check out Bay Furnace Park

On Lake Superior, there is a National Forest and Campground Area called Bay Furnace Park. Originally based around a stone blast furnace that was used throughout the 19th century. Almost everyone in the town of Onata worked in the iron and shipping industry. A fire, unfortunately, destroyed the town leaving only the furnace behind. But now you can walk the paths and trails with great views of Lake Superior.

  • The Lighthouse at the End of the Road

Or visit the beautiful lighthouse aptly named “The Lighthouse at the End of the Road” (sounds like the title of a Thomas Kincade painting). Built in 1914,  the lighthouse watches over Lake Superior

  • Send a letter from the post office

One of the main reasons to come to Christmas is to mail a letter from the post office so you can get the infamous Christmas stamp. They are especially busy during the holiday season for this reason.

  • The Pictured Rocks are right nearby

One of the most famous natural attractions in the Upper Peninsula is the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. They have cruises where you can tour the area also.

  • Hungry? Tired?

After a long trip to Christmas, you might be a little hungry and/or tired. Have some delicious food at Foggy’s Steakhouse and get rested at the Yule Log Resort.
