Michigan Campsites That Are Closing

If you love camping and going to Michigan campsites, then be warned that a lot of local campsites across the state are going to be closed for at least part of 2025. The good news is that most of these are being closed for renovations but will be open again sometime in 2025, and they’ll be updated and ready for Michigan campers to enjoy them. The renovations are tied to the 2022 Building Michigan Together Plan, which gave $250 million in federal funds to help Michigan’s state park system. If you’re camping in the coming year, keep this tally handy.
Michigan Campsites Closing
- Brimley State Park’s campground will be until May 19, 2025, and their day-use area will be closed until June 15, 2025.
- Clear Lake State Park’s modern campground and lodge will be closed from Oct. 15, 2024, to June 16, 2025.
- Fayette State Park’s historic townsite will be closed for the rest of the 2024 season.
- Fort Custer Recreation Area will have temporary closures for the toilet and shower building in the east loop from Nov. 4-15 and in the west loop from Nov. 18-29.
- Hartwick Pines State Park’s modern campground will be closed through the end of the 2024 camping season.
- Hoeft State Park’s campground will be closed from Oct. 15, 2024, to June 16, 2025.
- Interlochen State Park’s modern campground and day-use area east of J. Maddy Parkway will be closed through May 15, 2025.
- Ludington State Park will be closed until July 1, 2025, for major improvements.
- McLain State Park’s campground will be closed for the rest of the 2024 season to upgrade their wastewater system.
- Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area’s modern campground and overnight lodging will be closed until April 2025 for improvements in electrical, water and sewer systems.
- Otsego Lake State Park’s campground will open on May 1, 2025, but then close in early August for construction.
- Pinckney Recreation Area Bruin Lake’s modern campground will stay closed for the 2024 season.
- Pontiac Lake Recreation Area’s modern campground, including an A-frame tiny house and cottages, will be closed through April 2025.
- Port Crescent State Park’s campground will remain closed for the 2024 season.
- Rifle River Recreation Area’s modern campground will be closed through spring 2025.
- Sleepy Hollow State Park’s modern campground and shelters will be closed from April 15 to Oct. 31, 2025.
- Tawas Point State’s modern campground will be closed until April 30, 2025.
- Waterloo Recreation Area’s Sugarloaf and Portage Lake’s recreation area will be closed through Jan. 1, 2025. Also, their 2024 harvest festival is canceled but will be back in 2025.
- Yankee Springs Recreation Area’s campground and beach house will be closed for the 2024 season. Also, most of the park is still accessible, but everything will reopen in spring 2025.
