Detroit Auto Show Partners with Public Schools for Clothing Drive and Service Day
Thanks to the Detroit Auto Show’s efforts, a clothing drive to support students in the Detroit Public Schools Community District will be held from Jan. 10 to 18.
During the clothing drive, auto show attendees will be invited to donate new warm clothing to help families in need this winter. Donations can be delivered to the collection bins at the concourse area of Huntington Place, the auto show’s site. Items most in need include coats, waterproof gloves and mittens, and winter hats and scarves.
According to a news release provided to WXYZ-TV, the show’s organizers also announced a new Driven by Service Day initiative on Saturday, Jan. 18. This Driven by Service Day will feature performances from students of five Detroit schools and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan.
The clothing drive and Driven by Service Day honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. According to information provided by the Detroit Auto Show, the selection of Huntington Place is appropriate for this day of service, given that the site of the former Cobo Center was the first spot Dr. King made his “I Have a Dream” remarks in 1963.
Individuals can also make monetary contributions to the clothing drive through the Detroit Public Schools Community District Foundation.
“We’re pleased to partner with Detroit Public Schools Community District to make sure our local youth have access to essential clothing during the winter months,” Detroit Auto Show Co-Executive Director Sam Klemet said in a news release. “This effort and the show’s Driven by Service Day provide a tremendous opportunity to put into action Dr. King’s dream of servitude as we near the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.”
The Detroit Auto Show runs from Friday, Jan. 10 through Monday, Jan. 20. Ticket information is available on the show’s website.
