All Hail the delicious TWINKIE! It’s National Hostess Twinkie Day!

This shapely figure of mine was built on Twinkies! And today we should all celebrate as it is National Hostess Twinkie Day! Twinkies have been around since 1930. Twinkies have saved hungry animals. Toppled elections and filled many stomachs with vanilla goo! Let’s learn about Twinkies!

According to National Today, National Hostess Twinkie Day was first celebrated on April 6th, 2012. The day is also the anniversary of the invention over 93 years ago.

James Dewar invented the Twinkie. He came up with the idea while working as a Hostess bakery manager. There were short-cake pans that say idle during the off-season and James figured out how to put them to use. The name Twinkie came after seeing an advertisement for “Twinkle Toe Shoes”.

The cakes were originally filled with banana cream until there was a shortage during World War II. The filling was switched to vanilla after that.

Where’d my HOSTESS TWINKIES go???

Unfortunately in 2012, Hostess filed for bankruptcy and Twinkies vanished from grocery shelves! To the relief of yellow-cake eaters, the sponge cakes returned in 2013. Hostess had been purchased and their delicious Twinkies returned. But for a short time, terror was truly felt.

BONUS: Did you know that Ann Arbor has an April Fool’s Twinkie run? Yeah me either, but they do!

Hostess Twinkies have had many strange and wonderful events such as these (some are from foodprocessing.com):

PS: If we want to be honest, it was the Hostess Chocolate Cupcakes with those little white swirls on top that made me the man I am today.

  • The Twinkies did it!

Come on, blame the Twinkies! In 1979 Dan White blamed eating Twinkies while on trial for murder. It was permanently put in legal history as “The Twinkie Defense.”

  • It never dies!

Twinkies have had a running joke of lasting forever. But how much of that is true? In 1999, Bill Clinton put a Twinkie into the Millennium time capsule. Would it still be edible today?

  • Michigan Boy loves Twinkies!

In 2005, Donovin Cox, a 5th-grade student from Tecumseh, Michigan, won the Hostess Twinkie Box Design contest. He won a 40,000 college scholarship. I wonder what he majored in? Culinary arts?

  • You can't eat just one!

Well, you probably shouldn’t, but James Dewar sure will. Jame Dewar passed at 88 but not before consuming over 40,000 Twinkies over his lifetime.

  • Give those monkeys TWINKIES!

Before an escape mob of baboons could ravage a wildlife reserve in Ohio, Twinkies were used to wrangle them back under control.
