All Hail the delicious TWINKIE! It’s National Hostess Twinkie Day!
This shapely figure of mine was built on Twinkies! And today we should all celebrate as it is National Hostess Twinkie Day! Twinkies have been around since 1930. Twinkies have saved hungry animals. Toppled elections and filled many stomachs with vanilla goo! Let’s learn about Twinkies!
According to National Today, National Hostess Twinkie Day was first celebrated on April 6th, 2012. The day is also the anniversary of the invention over 93 years ago.
James Dewar invented the Twinkie. He came up with the idea while working as a Hostess bakery manager. There were short-cake pans that say idle during the off-season and James figured out how to put them to use. The name Twinkie came after seeing an advertisement for “Twinkle Toe Shoes”.
The cakes were originally filled with banana cream until there was a shortage during World War II. The filling was switched to vanilla after that.
Where’d my HOSTESS TWINKIES go???
Unfortunately in 2012, Hostess filed for bankruptcy and Twinkies vanished from grocery shelves! To the relief of yellow-cake eaters, the sponge cakes returned in 2013. Hostess had been purchased and their delicious Twinkies returned. But for a short time, terror was truly felt.
BONUS: Did you know that Ann Arbor has an April Fool’s Twinkie run? Yeah me either, but they do!
Hostess Twinkies have had many strange and wonderful events such as these (some are from foodprocessing.com):
PS: If we want to be honest, it was the Hostess Chocolate Cupcakes with those little white swirls on top that made me the man I am today.
