Historic Michigan Store, Open Since 1865, Has Roof Collapse
There aren’t too many historic Michigan stores left, but the ones that are still around are truly a treasure. Now, one historic Michigan store, a place that’s been open since 1865, is dealing with its roof collapsing. This store is special to me, so I hope they can get everything fixed up and start serving the public again soon.
Historic Michigan Store, Open Since 1865, Has Roof Collapse
Michigan has been getting a lot of rain this week. In fact, some areas of the state are dealing with flooding. Thankfully, we didn’t have any flooding in my area, but some of my friends were caught in flash floods while trying to travel during the rain. Now, one Michigan store is having to fix its roof, because the roof collapsed under the pressure of all that rain. This is especially sad for me to see, because my grandpa used to get all of his suits from this store when he was alive, and my uncle still buys clothes from there.
The historical Michigan store dealing with a roof collapse is Kositchek’s Mensware, which has been open since 1865 and is located in downtown Lansing. While it’s not totally official, the store manager thinks it’s the heavy rain that caused the roof to collapse. The roof tumbled down between late Tuesday evening (July 9) or early Wednesday (July 10). Store Manager Matt McCloud told WILX News 10 that, sadly, the store lost its full suit department to damage. That’s really heartbreaking, because they have some of the best suits in Michigan in that store. The Kositchek’s building will be closed until the damage can be repaired, too, as the city of Lansing red-tagged the building, calling it unsafe. But, according to WILX, customers who have scheduled pickup orders can call the business from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
As for some history on this historic Michigan store, Kositchek’s Menswear first opened 1865 by owner Henry Kositchek in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. It moved to its current location in downtown Lansing in the late 1800s, according to their official website. It’s mind-blowing to think that this store has been in downtown Lansing for more than a century. So, Kositchek’s has been in business for more than 150 years, and it’s currently being operated by the fourth generation. Their current owner is David Kositchek. That’s a really special story.
