Thousands Of Dragonflies Invade New England Beach
A video showing thousands of dragonflies invading a beach a Rhode Island beach is going viral! It’s like something out of a movie.
People on Misquamicut Beach, Rhode Island were given quite the scare recently when thousands of dragonflies swarmed the beach. They were everywhere! You couldn’t blame them if they thought it was the end of the world. That’s what it looked like!
Thousands Of Dragonflies Swarm Rhode Island Beach
It started as a nice weekend on the beach but quickly turned into chaos. A day on the beach is supposed to be relaxing and this looks far from that. Sure, you might be used to some bugs or insects annoying you during a beach day. However, you’d never expect this.
Joanne Vandal was on the beach when the dragonflies arrived, and she tells NBC Connecticut, “It was like a black cloud, and what started as a couple hundred was thousands and thousands of them. The little kids were terrified. They were screaming. They had no idea what was going on. I guess it was scary–everyone else just took out their phones and was like ‘What was going on?’ because it was so unnatural.” I wouldn’t know what to do if I saw this! Part of you would want to grab your phone so you can document this once-in-a-lifetime sight, but then part of you would want to run for cover! I’d probably end up frozen, just watching in amazement.
Vandal tells NBC Connecticut that the swarm of dragonflies was silent. That would somehow make things even more scary! You’d expect to hear buzzing or some sort of flying sound but then hearing nothing at all would be very eerie. Turns out, these dragonflies weren’t exclusive to Rhode Island and were also spotted in the state of Connecticut, per WFSB. While some people were scared and nervous about the sighting, other people are finding the silver lining saying that at least they won’t have to worry about mosquitos for a while. Dragonflies love them some mosquitos so while it might be a frightening sight, some good can come out of it if you’re looking to enjoy some time outdoors (once the thousands of dragonflies disperse).
