You’ve heard of haunted houses, but what about actual haunted places in Michigan? As it turns out, Michigan has quite a few haunted spots, which are perfect to check out during the fall months. So, what’s the absolutely most haunted place in Michigan?

The travel experts at Pure Michigan have put together a tally of the most haunted places in the state. “Take a journey into some of the most haunted places in Michigan,” they write. “From lighthouses to restaurants, there are a slew of locales that have a supernatural past all across the state.” First up on their roster is the Doherty Hotel in Clare, which the the Doherty family has owned and operated since the 1920s. According to Pure Michigan, the Doherty men are the business managers, but current owner Jim Doherty says “the Doherty women who were the heart and soul of the business.” They add that, “Over the years there have been numerous yet vague accounts of its haunting,” including a recording of what many believe was was the voice of Helen “grandma” Doherty.
If you’re looking to travel outside of Michigan and look for a haunted spot, Timeout.com has a new feature out about the most haunted Airbnbs in America. “We’ve scoured Airbnb’s most eclectic and eerie listings to find the most haunted Airbnbs in America, from creepy castles to spooky spare bedrooms and mysterious mansions,” they explain. “These rental haunted houses feature charming creaking floorboards, whimsical wainscoting, and vintage vibes along with chills, thrills, and frights from spirited ghost hosts that are straight out of the best Halloween movies of all time.”
According to Timeout.com, the No. 1 most haunted place in America is The Haunted Brothel in Victor, Colorado. As the story goes, following a fire in 1899, which destroyed this brothel, casino and saloon, “the space was rebuilt and meticulously restored, bringing spirited supernatural stories,” according to Timeout.com. So, who’s the ghost who occupies this spot? It’s not a bar regular. It’s a “former miner who died in a gunfight.” They also state that some of the taxidermy and art that decorates the place is really creepy, which adds a nice, spooky touch. They say this spot is affordable if you stay with a large group. I honestly wouldn’t want to stay at any of these places alone, so I say, the more, the merrier.
