Detroit Named One Of The Most Dangerous Cities For Pedestrians
Detroit has been named one of the most dangerous cities for pedestrians in a new study. This is not going to help the reputation we’ve been building.
The city of Detroit is unfortunately infamous for being a dangerous city. Personally, I’ve never experienced it first-hand, but it seems like anytime a list comes out Detroit is featured on it–and not in the best light. Now, Detroit is being named one of the most dangerous cities for pedestrians!
Detroit Named One Of The Most Dangerous Cities For Pedestrians
With all of those one-way streets in downtown Detroit, you’d think our pedestrians would feel safe walking the streets. The cars can only be coming from one direction–or, at least they should only be coming from one direction. It’s incredibly easy to get turned around and you end up on a one-way street. They’re seemingly everywhere downtown!
The Texas Law Dog conducted a study to rank the most dangerous cities for pedestrians in the United States. To make their rankings, The Texas Law Dog considered data about pedestrian fatality rates, walkability scores, and the percentage of parks and recreational areas in the city. Once combined, that should give a glimpse into which cities are the most dangerous for pedestrians walking the streets.
Unfortunately, when the data was examined Detroit was deemed to be one of the most dangerous cities for pedestrians, coming in as the 5th most dangerous, per The Texas Law Dog. The city of Detroit had one of the higher scores for pedestrian fatality rate per 100,000 people with a score of 5.8. Additionally, it scored high in accidents involving pedestrians, per The Texas Law Dog’s study. One positive thing the study noted was Detroit has a pretty good walkability score coming in at 51 which is higher than all other cities that made the most dangerous list.
What’s The Most Dangerous City For Pedestrians?
At least we weren’t named the most dangerous city for pedestrians. According to The Texas Law Dog, the top spot belongs to Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis had the highest pedestrian fatality rate per 100,000 people at a staggering 13.36. That’s the highest of all cities analyzed in the study. According to The Texas Law Dog‘s study, Memphis poses a significant risk to pedestrians. I’ve never visited the city so I’m unfamiliar with the infrastructure.
In The Texas Law Dog‘s study, Oklahoma City (Oklahoma) placed 2nd, Charlotte (North Carolina) was ranked 3rd, and Fort Worth (Texas) was named the 4th most dangerous cities for pedestrians. A spokesperson from The Texas Law Dog commented on the study saying, “Improving pedestrian safety requires a multi-faceted approach. Urban planners and policymakers must consider not only the phsyical layout of a city but also implement comprehensive safety programs that include public education, law enforcement, and community engagement.” Hopefully, the city of Detroit will address this and we won’t be featured on the list in 2025!
