The 27th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Awards: Big Wins For POC
The 27th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place Sunday night with all awards presented remotely over Zoom. The entire program, which aired on TBS and TNT, was only an hour and it was all prerecorded to avoid any technological mishaps. There were huge wins awarded to people of color, as first-time winners and some continuing to rack up awards.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 won the night’s big prize in the final category for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture, the guild’s top honor equivalent to a best picture prize. The award is a frequent predictor of who shall snag best picture at the upcoming Oscars. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the win also gives Netflix its first-ever victory in the best ensemble category, where it had two other films nominated: Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Michael Keaton set a record by becoming the first person to win three SAG awards for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture for his role in The Trial of the Chicago 7. This follows his awards as part of the winning ensemble in 2014’s Birdman and 2015’s Spotlight.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom triumphed in the lead actor categories. Viola Davis was up against hard-hitting contenders for female actor in a leading role, including Frances McDormand in Nomadland and Carey Mulligan in Promising Young Woman. Davis nearly fell off her chair when she was named the winner for her starring role as blues singer Ma Rainey in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, making it the best reaction shot of the night. She and Halle Berry are the only the Black women to win this category. Davis also ties with Renee Zellweger for the most individual SAG awards of any actress with three wins.

A few moments later, Davis’s co-star, the late Chadwick Boseman, won for male actor in a leading role. His wife, Simone Ledward Boseman, accepted the honor with a quote she attributed to her husband: “‘If you see the world unbalanced, be a crusader that pushes heavily on the seesaw of the mind.’ That’s a quote by Chadwick Boseman. Thank you, Screen Actors [Guild]. Thank you, Chad. Thank you.” Boseman set a record with four film nominations this year, including two solo nominations for best actor in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and best supporting actor for Da 5 Bloods and two best cast nods as part of the ensembles of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods.
Youn Yuh-jung earned the award for best female actor in a supporting role for Minari and was overwhelmed with emotion. “I don’t know how to describe my feelings,” she said, adding she was “very, very honored.” When she expressed concern about her English, Jared Leto, Glenn Close and Olivia Colman cheered her on yelling, “perfect!” According to the Hollywood Reporter, Yuh-jung also made SAG history as the first Asian actor to win in an individual movie category. She’s also the first Korean actress to be nominated for the Oscar for best supporting actress. In her acceptance speech, Yuh-jung said, “I don’t know how to describe my feelings. I’m being recognized by Westerners.”
Daniel Kaluuya won for best supporting actor for his performance as the late Black Panther leader Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah.
