Michigan’s First Major Snowstorm of the Season is Coming – When & Where
Michigan looks like it will circumnavigate the big East Coast storm brewing for this weekend. But, a different storm system is forming that will bring the first Michigan snowstorm of the season to the area next week. I’m not happy about this new snow development. We escaped the cold and snow through all of December, and I would like that to last all season. But, let’s get into Michigan’s first major snowstorm of the season.
As for this weekend, while the East Coast will see lots of activity, both rain and snow depending on the area, Michigan is just on the edge of the storm and will likely get a dusting of snow, according to the National Weather Service. Some area of Michigan, mainly in the southern parts of the state, could get an inch of snow. But, it won’t be very active. Any snow would move into the area on Saturday (Jan. 6) and Sunday (Jan. 7). Monday (Jan. 8) will be uneventful, but Tuesday (Jan. 9) gets dicey. That’s when Michigan’s first major snowstorm starts to arrive.
According to the National Weather Service, Tuesday will start with snowfall across lower Michigan, but that snow will transition to rain when highs move into the 40s by midday. Then, the rain will turn to snow overnight, and more accumulation is possible. Right now, according to Weather.com, accumulation totals for Tuesday into Wednesday are anywhere from 1 to 6 inches. So, it’s still very fuzzy. Moreover, currently, Detroit has rain Tuesday night while other areas of the state, such as Lansing, have snow, so this storm could vary widely depending on where you’re located in the state. What’s more, if temperatures rise or fall even a little bit during this storm, that could drastically change the outcome. It could be a ton of snow of just rain. Those in West Michigan have a clearer picture, with 3 to 6 inches of snow expected and higher totals off Lake Michigan.
