The Kentucky Derby has officially been postponed until September due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

First reported by the Kentucky Courier-Journal, instead of traditionally taking place on the first Saturday of May, which falls on the 2nd this year, the Kentucky Derby will take place on September 5, the first Saturday in September.

The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of The Triple Crown, followed by the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. Those races are currently scheduled to take place on May 16 and June 6, respectively.

The Kentucky Derby is just the latest sporting event to be postponed or affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The NBA has suspended the remained of their 2019-20 season, while nearly every other sports league, including MLB, NHL and MLS, have put their season’s on hold and will evaluate their status in April.
