Egg Prices Going Up, Just Before Easter
Your Easter egg hunt just got a lot more expensive – thanks to inflation and the avian flu outbreak. According to the USDA, the price of a dozen large eggs is up 44 % over this time last year.
On top of inflation raising prices on just about everything at the grocery store, an outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza has forced poultry farmers to kill over 23 million chickens and turkeys to limit the spread of disease.
To stop the spread of the virus, more than 13 million hens have been killed in Iowa, according to the USDA’s outbreak tracking. Nationwide, the outbreak has affected nearly 18 million commercial table egg layer hens and nearly 2 million turkeys.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the risk to the general public’s health is low. ” The proper handling and cooking of poultry and eggs to an internal temperature of 165 F kills bacteria and viruses, including H5N1 bird flu viruses,” according to the CDC.
