For those considering moving, finding a safe place to reside is always a crucial part of the process. Growing up in Michigan, it always felt like a safe place to me. But, like any state, there are some areas that have more crime than others. So, how safe is Michigan? As it turns out, one Michigan city has been named one of the safest in America. It might not be the city you expect, either.

Visualcapitalist.com has released a new list of the safest cities in America. They emphasized that for this study, they looked at "modern-day suburbia," instead of just "small town America" cities. They also said that while people often think of small towns as safe, "some of the smallest places in the country can actually be among the most dangerous," citing Bessemer, Alabama, as an example. Regardless, they add that they complied their current list of the safest cities in the U.S. by using FBI data and Census Bureau populations from NeighborhoodScout in 2023.

Before we get to Michigan, let's look at the safest city in all of America. According to the study, it's Ridgefield, Connecticut. That town has a population of just 25,011 and a total crime rate of 1.9 per 1,000 residents. Those living there have the chance of being a victim just 1 in 510. The major city nearby is Bridgeport.

So, what Michigan city made the cut for being one of the safest in America? White Lake, which comes in at No. 15 on the tally. The popular of White Lake is 30,990 and the total crime rate per 1,000 residents is 4.2. The chance of being a victim is 1 in 233, and the major city nearby is Detroit. I really thought that a West Michigan city might make the cut for one of the safest in America, but White Lake is beautiful, so I'm not totally surprised. When deciding where to live, safety is always a big factor, so hopefully this helps.
