Things are getting exciting in Hockeytown. Detroit is buzzing after learning that 3-time Stanley Cup Champion Patrick Kane is reportedly signing with the Detroit Red Wings.

The NHL community has been not so patiently waiting to learn where the former number one pick would be landing. Elliotte Friedman, of Sportsnet, reported yesterday on his X account firmly stating that "Patrick Kane is signing with the Detroit Red Wings."

Patrick Kane Joins The Detroit Red Wings

Late Tuesday night, the Detroit Red Wings confirmed the news on their X account. The released a post saying that the move is official and the Red Wings have signed Kane to a one-year deal for $2.75M AAV.

Patrick Kane, now 35, spent 16 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks before being traded to the New York Rangers late last year. He was the first overall pick in the 2007 draft. During his time in Chicago, he won the Stanley Cup three times. Kane also helped Team USA win the Silver Medal at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.

Patrick is basically a shoe-in to make the Hall of Fame one day. In addition to his three Stanley Cups, he's a nine time All-Star. He also won the Conn Smythe Trophy for being the Most Valuable Player for the Champion Blackhawks during the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs. In 2016, he won the Art Ross Trophy for leading the NHL in points, the Hart Memorial Trophy for being the league MVP, and the Ted Lindsay Award which goes to the most outstanding player in the regular season. Not a bad season.

What's Next For The Red Wings?

Kane joining the Red Wings is even more exciting because it reunites Patrick with his former Chicago teammate Alex DeBrincat. The two had great chemistry during their time together as Blackhawks. Hopefully they can continue that this season. DeBrincat has already had a stellar start to the season with 12 goals and 8 assists in 20 games.

Although he is getting older and has been battling injuries lately, Kane has proven in recent years that when he's healthy he can still be a valuable asset. Last year during his stint with the Rangers and Blackhawks, he totaled 21 goals and 36 assists in 73 games, according to ESPN. However, during the 2021-2022 season, he had 26 goals and 66 assists totaling an impressive 92 points in 78 games. There's still something in the tank and I'm optimistic that the Red Wings can get the most out of him, and he can contribute in a major way.

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
