Michigan Mountain Has Some Great Spring Skiing
Is there anything better than hitting the slopes in a T-shirt? If you’re skiing in short sleeves, the sun is likely shining, you’ve endured most of what winter threw your way, and you can still enjoy a day skiing. As we start to prepare for spring, On The Snow has detailed the best places in the country for spring skiing, and a Michigan mountain made the list.
What Is The Spring Skiing Difference and Why Do It?
“For some, spring skiing is only in March, while in other destinations, the spring ski season can go into May and beyond,” On The Snow states.
So, this begs the question, what makes spring skiing unique? Well, for enthusiasts of the sport, you simply don’t want the opportunities to end. Warmer weather could give you the chance to practice in more comfortable temperatures.
Spring skiing is also important for the mountains, lodges, and affiliated resorts. With the past two winters being mild, some folks have skied less. Having the extra weeks to remain open allows these businesses to stay productive.
In Michigan, this mountain, which is great for spring skiing, has also conquered the challenge of creating decent powder for people to ski on during these months.
The Highlands
Located in Harbor Springs, The Highlands offers a full experience for mountain lovers. In addition, “the resort will often extend lift hours during the spring ski season and keep the lifts running late into the day,” On The Snow says.
From March 15 – 17, The Highlands will host a special “Ring In Spring” weekend. This includes live music, soccer with ski boots on, food tastings, and competitions. One of them is their infamous “Slush Cup,” where skiers brave enough (and skilled enough) attempt skiing over a pond. There is also a “Silly Slalom” event on Saturday.
As winter winds down in Michigan and we await the return of baseball, it’s great to know that spring skiing in the state is highly regarded at The Highlands. In fact, it was one of only three mountains not out west to be named the best spot for spring skiing in the country.
