Today In Black History: Poet Melvin B. Tolson Was Born
Melvin B. Tolson was born in Moberly, Missouri. He was known for his complex, visionary poetry and was considered one of America’s leading Black poets. His work was influenced by the Harlem Renaissance however Tolson was not a participant in it.
The movie, “The Great Debaters” starring Denzel Washington was based on Tolson’s vibrant career teaching English and speech at Wiley College, in Marshall, Texas. Tolson created the first black debate team to challenge Harvard’s prestigious debate champions. (Sources: poetryfoundation.org and blackhistorydaily.com)

Randi Myles is the mid-day host on Detroit’s Praise Network. Randi’s mom knew she was destined to be in some form of entertainment when even as a small child, she would pretend a pencil was a microphone and sing and charm family and friends. Later she would sing in church and college choirs. However, it wasn’t until she attended Specs Howard School of Media Arts, that Ms. Myles would find her true voice. Randi enjoys writing about the city of Detroit, faith, and the community.
