June is African-American Music Appreciation Month
June is African-American Music Appreciation Month in the U.S.
It’s a month where we appreciate and honor the contributions of African-American musicians, composers, singers, artists and songwriters in every genre.
President Jimmy Carter designated June as Black Music Month back in 1979, and in 2000, the presidential proclamation for the month was signed by President Bill Clinton.
In 2009, President Barack Obama renamed the month from Black Music Month to African-American Music Appreciation Month.
Let’s celebrate the great works of African-American artists all month.
Anne Erickson started her radio career shortly after graduating from Michigan State University and has worked on-air in Detroit, Flint, Toledo, Lansing and beyond. As someone who absolutely loves rock, metal and alt music, she instantly fell in love with radio and hasn’t looked back. When she’s not working, Anne makes her own music with her band, Upon Wings, and she also loves cheering on her favorite Detroit and Michigan sports teams, especially Lions and MSU football. Anne is also an award-winning journalist, and her byline has run in a variety of national publications. You can also hear her weekends on WRIF.
