Detroit Post Office Officially Renamed After Aretha Franklin
Aretha Franklin was honored on Monday (Oct. 5) with a post office in Detroit featuring her famous name.
The former Fox Creek post office was re-named in honor of Franklin, and members of Franklin’s family and various postal and elected officials were on hand to help celebrate the famous musician.
“Her legacy lives on in her music, in her family. But we have added to that list of her legacy: A post office with her name on it,” said U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence, Democrat, a postal service worker.
Lawrence knew Franklin personally and introduced the bill in Congress to name the post office in Franklin’s honor.
The U.S. Congress and Senate easily passed the bill.
“Sometimes people wonder if Congress can come together,” U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, Democrat, said at the ceremony. “Congress can come together when it comes to standing up and recognizing this amazing person.”
The post office is roughly five miles east of downtown Detroit. It’s new name is the “Aretha Franklin Post Office Building.”
