Michigan Weather: What Kind of Winter Will We Get?
Winter is coming, and in Michigan, you know it’s never going to be a piece of cake. I don’t even want to think about winter, but we’re already in mid-August, so it’s time.
Each year in 1818, the Farmers’ Almanac has predicted winter conditions across America. This year, they have a very specific prediction for the Midwest, including Michigan.
According to the almanac, Michiganders should get ready to “shake, shiver, and shovel!” Lovely. It also says the Great Lakes region could get an “unreasonably cold, snowy” experience, mainly in January. In addition, the almanac says, “The first bite of winter should come earlier than last year’s. December 2022 looks stormy and cold nationwide with an active storm pattern developing and hanging around for most of the season over the eastern half of the country.” The prediction continues, stating, “In the Great Lakes region, residents should expect an unreasonably cold and snowy winter.” In addition, “Winter storm warnings may start the first week of January, with potential for heavy snow that may reach as far south as Texas and Oklahoma.”
But, do we believe it? Well, the almanac isn’t always right. It even states, “neither we nor any other forecasters have as yet gained sufficient insight into the mysteries of the universe to predict the weather with total accuracy” and adds that “our results are often very close to our traditional claim of 80 percent.” I don’t mind the cold, but the snow I definitely mind. I’m always hoping for a cold buy dry winter, but it appears we’re getting the moisture. Now would be a good time to book that winter vacation to Florida. See you there!
