How To Travel Safely This Christmas During The Pandemic

Author Andrea Swindall - Pop Culture Writer
December 9th, 2020 2:30 PM

Although most are forgoing travel this year due to the coronavirus, some will still travel to see family for the holidays. If you are one of those people, here are some ways to stay safe during the winter season, according to the CDC.

The Basics

By now, we all know the basics to keep us safe from the coronavirus. Anyone who will be on airplanes and at airports should know by now to wear a mask, wash hands for at least twenty seconds, social distance, and keep hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes on hand.

Think Ahead

The CDC recommends checking the infection rates in the city and counties you will be traveling to so you are informed and prepared. Then when you get there, try to stay outdoors, away from poorly ventilated spaces, and try to gather in short spurts of time.

Get Tested Beforehand

Before you even jump on a plane, bus, etc., test yourself to make sure you are in the clear. Especially if you are visiting an older family member or someone with compromised health. CDC also recommends getting a flu shot for extra precaution.

Consider Staying Elsewhere

Even if you do visit family and you usually stay with them, it might be worth the extra money to stay the night in a hotel or somewhere else. That way, there are fewer people continuously gathering in the same spot.

Bring Your Own Snacks

If you are going to a city or state you don’t know well, it might be worth it to bring your own snacks and water. You might end up somewhere where drive-through, dine-in, or take-out options aren’t available or closed. This will also help you to have less contact with people you don’t know.

Quarantine

When you return from travel and visiting family, it might be worth it to quarantine at home for 14 days just in case you were in contact with someone who is sick.

10 Movies You Definitely Shouldn’t Watch If Coronavirus Scares You

  • The Crazies

    Share

What happens when a toxin turns people into bloodthirsty lunatics? Well, The Crazies tell you.

  • I Am Legend

    Share

Will Smith takes us on a ride in the post-apocalyptic thriller about a plague that turns humans into mutants. Good times.

  • World War Z

"World War Z" - This apocalyptic action horror film is terrifying, but at least looking at Brad Pitt makes it better.

  • 2012

    Share

This doomsday thriller featuring John Cusack isn't about viruses, but it does show what the end of the world could look like.

  • Quarantine

    Share

A mysterious virus, death, and bloody thirsty killer - What more could you want on your television screen right now? This movie, from 2008, is so bad that it's good. Even better: it has a sequel you can watch too.

  • Contagion

    Share

This movie has a killer cast (Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, and Kate Winslet all star in it), and its eerily similar to what we are currently dealing with amid the coronavirus outbreak.

This film shows what happens when health workers fight to contain Ebola. What makes is scarier is that it's based on a true story.

  • Containment
