Bishop Charles Ellis, Rev. Joann Watson & Mama Shu Harris To Be Honored On MLK Day
Rainbow PUSH Coalition founder and civil rights leader, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., will host the “Let Freedom Ring,” on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s national holiday, Monday, January 16, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. at the Fox Theatre. The recipients include both Rabbi Daniel Syme, emeritus leader of Temple Beth El and Bishop Charles Ellis, III, senior pastor of Greater Grace Temple, will receive the Theological Leadership Award; Rev. JoAnn Watson, associate pastor of West Side Unity Church and former executive director of Detroit Branch NAACP will receive the Social Justice Award; and Shamayim “Mama Shu ” Harris, a Highland Park advocate, will receive the Humanitarian Award.
Additionally, Blake Corum, running back of the University of Michigan will receive with the inaugural Collegiate Social Service Award and Detroit own Kem, will be recognized for his commitment in bringing awareness to homelessness.
Grammy-award winning artist Howard Hewett will headline this year’s entertainment, In the spirit of Dr. King, Pastor Solomon Kinloch of Triumph Church will deliver an opening message at this year’s celebration. Rev. Jackson said that, “Detroit has always had a special place in our collective long walk to equity and justice,” adding, “in spite of Dr. King’s death, his truths are still marching on.”
