Michigan Neighborhood Reporting Brown Water
It’s never a good thing when your water turns a color that isn’t crystal clear. In Michigan, where we have the history of the Flint water crisis, any signs of dirty drinking water causes a lot of alarm. Now, one Michigan neighborhood is reporting brown water. When I heard about this, it definitely made me uneasy, but there is a reason.
Michigan Neighborhood Seeing Brown Water
Some rust-colored water is popping up in a Michigan neighborhood in Lansing. David Neal lives on Reo Rd. in Lansing, and he tells WLNS.com that this has been going on since last year. According to the outlet, last year, he noticed a “cloudy, brown shade of water coming from his faucets.” He also said that after noticing that water, he began hearing a weird sound coming from his water heater. Not only did he have to replace his water heater, but he also discovered that his shower tub was corroding because of the brown water.
Neal says that last weekend, the Lansing Fire Department even got involved. “The fire department came down here, turned on the spigot, they opened it up and they were appalled at the color of the water,” he tells WLNS.com. Neal describes that for about 45 minutes, the Lansing Fire Department tried to flush out the dirty water from the hydrant. In the end, it didn’t clear up. So, the fire department contacted the Lansing Board of Water and Light and asked them to look into the issue.
The Board of Water and Light told Neil to keep running water from the faucet to flush out the brown water. They also said that they wouldn’t charge him for that water use. But, Neal tells WLNS.com that the cloudy water is going to come back. “Once it get cleaned out, it’s okay for a while but sediment builds up somehow,” he said. The BWL told WLNS.com that “when the fire truck tried to use the hydrant, it might have stirred up the water, which gave it the cloudy color and red tint.” A BWL official also told them it should go back to clear water when it’s flushed out.
